For Parents With Pre-K (“pre-Kindergarten”) Children
Help Your Child To Become “Kindergarten-Ready!!!”
====
Parents, these activities are designed to provide a laser focus for you to use in working with your pre-K children to boost their educational readiness. These activities will expose them to four foundational areas that will help them – with abundant practice time! – toward succeeding at being “Kindergarten-ready” when they walk into their very first day of Kindergarten.
Module One will focus on their learning the 26 letters of the English alphabet. We will call these the “letter-NAMES.”
Module Two will focus on their learning the most-frequent sound that each of those 26 letters makes. We will call these the “letter-SOUNDS.”
Module Three will focus on their learning up to 200 of the VERY IMPORTANT most-frequent words in the English language.
Module Four is a long list of stories that the children can LISTEN to (we don’t expect them to be able to read these stories yet). The goal of these stories is to entertain them, but they are also to help them build a much larger spoken vocabulary than one would get in a typical American household. That’s because written stories simply use great vocabulary words that just don’t usually show up in daily conversations.

MODULE ONE
1) LEARNING THE ALPHABET’S 26 LETTER-“NAMES“
====
Parents, this first set of activities in Module One will concentrate on learning the 26 letters of the alphabet, using the “upper-case” / “capital” letters. (We’ll practice this again with the “lower-case” letters – later in Module One.) Important: when we say our “alphabet,” we are learning our letter-NAMES. In Module Two, we will learn our letter-SOUNDS (the most-frequent sound that each letter makes).
Click the very first speaker button below to hear the alphabet spoken in its “normal order,” starting at letter-A and ending in letter-Z. Then beneath that very first list of the alphabet, you will find some links to various YouTubes that recite the alphabet in song form. Beneath the YouTube links, you will find six more practice activities to help children learn their alphabet letter-names OUTSIDE of their “normal order.” It’s very important that they eventually learn to recognize their letters instantly, no matter in what order the letters are randomly presented!

MODULE TWO
2) LEARNING THE ALPHABET’S 26 LETTER-“SOUNDS“
This next learning module after having learned the alphabet (i.e. “the letter-names“) will be to learn the “letter-SOUNDS.” This will teach children the most-frequent sound that each of the alphabet letter-names makes.
These activities will use words that start with the letter-name‘s most frequent sound (with the exception of letter-X, where the letter-SOUND is made at the END of a word or a syllable).
Here are a couple of examples. We will tell the children that “A is for apple.” When you sound-out the word “apple,” there are three letter-sounds in that word. The first of those three-sounds (a sound that is often called the “short-a” sound in this word) is the most frequent sound of letter-name-A. How about “B is for bug?” Again, there are three letter sounds in that word, and the first of those three sounds is the most-frequent sound of letter-name-B. Etc.
Here are some helpful YouTubes:

In the sentences below – where you will see red words – the student clicks on the green speaker button at the beginning of the sentence. The student is NOT expected to be able to READ the words in the black text, but should just listen to those black words.
When the computer is reading out-loud, it will stop reading when it gets to the red “teaching word.” The student is then to click on the red word (sometimes multiple times) until every letter in that word has been “sounded-out” one-by-one – and, after that, then the word is spoken as a whole. After that, the computer will continue to read the rest of the sentence until the sentence ends.
A is for “apple.” Click below (3 times) on the blue word “apple” and listen to the VERY FIRST SOUND that you hear in that word, and then say JUST that first sound yourself: apple

Most-frequent-word activities for the children
We will introduce the most-frequent words to the children in descending order of frequency. Sentences will be displayed, and each of the 200 frequent words will be considered to be a “teaching word.” There will be three sentences for each teaching word. The children will click the speaker button at the beginning of each sentence; all words in the sentence are in black type except for the “teaching word,” which will be in red type. The children are NOT expected to be able to read the black type words. The objective is to teach just the red “teaching words.” When the children click the speaker button, the sentence will be read to them. The read-out-loud will stop when the speaker arrives at the red teaching word. The child must click on the red word as many times as it takes to hear each letter in each word “sounded-out,” and then to hear the word spoken as a whole. Then the sentence reading will finally be completed. Traditionally, words like these top 200 words have been called “sight words.” They may have been taught as “whole words” without breaking them into their individual letter sounds (in a sense, thus taught as “symbols”). This is a highly damaging practice. EVERY new word learned should be learned by SOUNDING IT OUT, letter-by-letter! The groundbreaking technology in this website will do exactly that for the students!

Do you know what their parents do for a living?
***
Teaching word: can
Can you open this glass jar for me?
Guess what, Dad; I can swim the length of the pool now.
That empty soft drink can should go into the recycling bin.
***
Teaching word: from
There’s a package at the front door from Amazon.
It took us two hours to drive from our house to my cousin’s house.
From now on, I’m going to keep this away from my little brother.
***
Teaching word: as
It’s as cold as the North Pole outside!
Suzy isn’t as nice as Penny is.
As you know, I love a steak cooked on the grill.
***
Teaching word: me
You don’t really know anything about me, do you?
Mom asked me to help her fix tonight’s dinner.
If you asked me, I’d tell you to not waste your money seeing that movie.
***
Teaching word: do
I do not like that food!
What would you do if you won a million dollars?
I’ll do everything that I can to help you with that.
***
Teaching word: would
Would you like another serving of potatoes?
I think that Mom would like this necklace as a birthday present.
I think that this would be a good spot for our picnic lunch.
***
Teaching word: will
Dad, will we be able to go to the beach this summer?
What will you do tomorrow if it’s a rainy day?
It will take lots of will power to stop eating desserts for a month.
***
Teaching word: when
I don’t know when I can get to those chores.
I wonder when the next bus will arrive here at the stop.
When my dad eats chocolate, he starts to sneeze!
***
Teaching word: him
I don’t know him, but I’m going to go introduce myself.
When I saw him the last time, he had grown a beard.
I didn’t ask him what his grade on the test was, but he had a big smile on his face!
***
Teaching word: it’s
It’s so great to see you; how long has it been?
I don’t know if it’s going to snow tonight or not.
It’s wise to study long and hard before an important test.
***
Teaching word: see
It’s snowing so hard that I can barely see the road.
I’ll see if I can get that done before five o’clock.
I don’t see how you could have figured out that math problem so quickly!
***
Teaching word: get
Please make sure that you get a dozen eggs at the store.
If the traffic is light, we can get there in just two hours.
What do you think you might get for Christmas this year?
***
Teaching word: some
I’d love some ice cream on my apple pie, please.
That was some hard test that our teacher gave us today!
Mom, why do some people drive so crazy?
***
Teaching word: did
I did fifty push-ups today!
Sorry; I did not mean to say that.
Did you say “thank you” to the Smiths for letting you eat dinner over there tonight?
***
Teaching word: little
Could I have a little bit more of those delicious mashed potatoes?
I got a little cut on my left leg during recess today.
Mom, I can’t button up this shirt; it’s too little for me now.
***
Teaching word: or
Which would you prefer for dessert; cake or pie?
Do you know yet if your new baby is a boy or a girl?
Should I give your grandma this purse or this scarf for her birthday?
***
Teaching word: an
Can I have an apple for a snack?
I saw an octopus at the aquarium today!
Oops, I just dropped an egg on the kitchen floor.
***
Teaching word: could
Could I stay up past nine o’clock tonight?
I bet you didn’t know that I could hit a baseball that far.
I could tell how mad she was by looking at her face.
***
Teaching word: just
We got there just in time to see the beginning of the movie.
I need just a little bit more time to finish this chore.
I just can’t stand that new guy in our class because he’s a bully.
***
Teaching word: down
Walk down those stairs carefully; there may be ice on them.
Please put that box down on the floor by the sofa.
Is that elevator going up or down?
***
Teaching word: no
Every other word coming from that little boy’s mouth is “NO!”
When he asked her if she wanted any more food, she said, “no, thanks.”
There’s no one in this room who I know.
***
Teaching word: went
The summer went by quickly, didn’t it?
Dad went to the barber to get a haircut.
They went to the mountains on their vacation.
***
Teaching word: into
Our curious cat is always getting into trouble.
She stuck her toes into the pool and yelled, “That’s way too cold!”
Put your dirty clothes into the washing machine.
***
Teaching word: that’s
Wow, I think that’s Mr. Smith’s cool new sports car.
When I walked into the kitchen, I said, “Mom, that’s enough food to feed an army!”
My teacher looked at my paper and said, “That’s the right way to do that math problem.”
***
Teaching word: by
Honey, you need to be home from the party by midnight, okay?
Who is that weird-looking dude standing by the bleachers over there?
They should have gotten here by now; there must be a wreck on the highway.
***
Teaching word: about
Dad, do you know much about dinosaurs?
It looks like there are about twenty kids on the bus.
I think that he’s about six feet tall.
***
Teaching word: time
Can you please tell me what time it is?
I think that it’s about time to do our yearly spring cleaning.
Okay, kids; it’s time for bed!
***
Teaching word: back
I’ll be back in about an hour.
Don’t run into another car when you back up!
Lie down on your back, and I’ll show you a useful exercise.
***
Teaching word: got
She got down on her knees and prayed.
I’ve had a really great time, but I’ve got to go home now.
When he got up out of his chair, he had a dizzy spell and sat back down.
***
Teaching word: good
You did a really good job cleaning up your room.
Mom, this surely tastes good!
Dad, I have some good news; I got an “A” on my book report.
***
Teaching word: has
Do you know what he has in that box; something is moving inside of it.
Did you know that Mrs. Jones has four cats?
The weather has been quite good lately, hasn’t it?
***
Teaching word: how
Can you please show me how to do that?
How much money is that going to cost?
Hey guys; how about we go get some pizza after the game?
***
Teaching word: now
Sorry, but right now I just don’t have the time to meet with you.
Finally, we’ve now saved up enough money to buy that new car.
I’m ready to serve dinner now.
***
Teaching word: if
If you study hard for the test, you’ll do well on it.
Do you know if we’re supposed to get any snow this month?
Do you think that I’ll make the team if I try out for it?
***
Teaching word: made
Honey, have you made up your bed yet?
I made a mistake and dropped an easy fly ball in the baseball game today.
Mom, since you had to work late, Dad made dinner for us.
***
Teaching word: day
One day, I want to walk on either the moon or Mars.
Good grief; I’ve forgotten what day it is today.
When things are crazy in your life, you have to take just one day at a time.
***
Teaching word: people
How many people came to Ron’s birthday party?
Why are those people not wearing coats on a freezing day like today?
All of those people are standing in line to get a ticket.
***
Teaching word: go
My favorite early childhood book was “Go, Dog. Go!”
Dad, can we go to a college football game some time this fall?
Get ready! Get set! GO!
***
Teaching word: our
Our grass is looking pretty dead right now, and it’s due to the drought.
Mom, can you remind me what our phone number is?
Our dog and cat get along with each other really well.
***
Teaching word: make
I think that I’ll make a pot of chicken and rice soup for dinner tonight.
Since I was out sick on the day of the test, my teacher’s going to let me make it up.
Please listen carefully and don’t make me say this more than once!
***
Teaching word: two
Our toddler just turned two years old.
I take two cubes of sugar with my tea.
The lady at the counter gave me two dollars in change.
***
Teaching word: big
Why are you making such a big deal about this; calm down.
Those shoes are way too big for my feet.
I think that Scott’s house is twice as big as ours!
***
Teaching word: too
I don’t like crowds, and there are way too many people here for my tastes.
I thought that was a really good movie, too.
There’s too much food on your plate; you’ll never be able to eat all of that.
***
Teaching word: off
Don’t forget to turn off the lights down here when you come up to bed.
That rocket is going to take off in sixty seconds.
Please help me clean off these dirty dishes from the kitchen table.
***
Teaching word: way
What’s the best way to drive downtown from here?
I’d be scared to climb all the way up to the top of that tall ladder.
Our history test was way easier than I thought it would be.
***
Teaching word: these
Look, you’re never going to use any of these things again; why don’t you throw them out?
These are the things that I’ll need from the store to fix tonight’s dinner.
Do these earrings go well with my outfit?
***
Teaching word: mom
My mom makes the best potato salad.
Does your mom make you do all of your homework before you can go out and play?
I want you to meet my mom; she’s right over there in the red dress.
***
Teaching word: things
Can you help me bring in the things from the car, please?
We have too many things in the attic, and we need to clean it out!
Those two things that you see way up in the sky are hot air balloons.
***
Teaching word: here
He said to his dog, “Come here Buddy, and I’ll give you a treat.”
When the second act of the play starts, you’ll be standing on the stage right here.
Here is the part of the store where you’ll find all of the toys.
***
Teaching word: man
Man, I’m tired after today’s tough football practice!
See that man behind the counter about returning your product.
Every man in this room who’s taking this test wants to be a lawyer someday.
***
Teaching word: more
You finished that quickly, so would you like some more soup?
For me, there’s nothing more fun than going to an amusement park with lots of rides.
Good grief, how many more laps is the coach going to make us run?
***
Teaching word: old
This car is old, and I have to keep taking it to the shop to get something else fixed.
Your grandpa will turn eighty years old tomorrow.
This part of the city is called “Old Town, and there are lots of neat buildings and shops here.
***
Teaching word: came
Last week, I came down with a nasty cold, and I’m still fighting it.
I just came upstairs to look for something, but now I can’t remember what it is.
Joey came over to the house this morning to see my new bike.
***
Teaching word: who
Who would be crazy enough to wear an outfit like that?
Do you know anyone who could give me piano lessons?
The police will try to find out who robbed our house!
***
Teaching word: where
Does anyone know where the vacuum cleaner is?
Where should we go to dinner after the movie is over?
I’m looking for someone to show me on the map where the country of Spain is.
***
Teaching word: over
The game will probably be over in about five minutes.
Bring that over here, please.
I’ll open up the umbrella and put it over both of our heads.
***
Teaching word: don’t
I don’t think that I can finish this by the end of the day.
I don’t have a clue about how to figure out that math problem.
Uh-oh; we don’t have any milk in the refrigerator.
***
Teaching word: I’m
You can’t imagine how much I’m looking forward to the holidays!
The doctor said that I’m pretty much in perfect health.
I bet that you don’t know what I’m holding in my left hand.
***
Teaching word: look
You look like you could use some rest and relaxation.
Take a closer look, and I think that you’ll see that funny-looking bird up in that tree.
Don’t ever look directly at the sun; that can harm your eyes!
***
Teaching word: well
I’m about to go see the school nurse, because I don’t feel well at all.
Dad said to me, “That’s a job well done,” after I’d finished raking the yard.
Granny said, “Well now, with a look like that on your face, I wonder if you’ve just been into some mischief!”
***
Teaching word: long
You’d better wear long pants today; it’s cold outside.
It took me a long time to read that book, but it was worth it.
This dress doesn’t fit me; it’s way too long.
***
Teaching word: know
I don’t know much about gardening; things that I try to grow always wither and die.
Once you get to know her, you’ll find out that she has a great sense of humor.
Didn’t you know that doing that was going to get you into big trouble?
***
Teaching word: come
Can you come to my house and play around three o’clock?
When you come downstairs, bring down any dirty dishes that you have in your room.
After you have lots of practice with this, you’ll come to be very confident in using it.
***
Teaching word: new
We’re going to New York city on our vacation.
Let me show you my new car!
The new kid in our class is really good at sports.
***
Teaching word: says
The dentist says that my teeth are in excellent shape.
Who says that I can’t do that; I’ll show you right now that I can!
Simon says, “Raise your arms!”
***
Teaching word: each
Each of the dishes for tonight’s dinner is homemade.
Each of you needs to write your Christmas thank-you notes by the end of this weekend.
You can have one each of these three different cookies.
***
Teaching word: other
Team, run to the other side of the field and back, as fast as you can!
Oops, I need to add one other thing to the grocery list.
The cat prefers the other toy that’s over there on the couch.
***

I love the holiday song, “I’ll be home for Christmas.”
Mom, I’ll be home later than usual; I’m staying after school for chess club.
I think that I’ll order a juicy steak for dinner.
***
Teaching word: called
Dad, Uncle Bob called about an hour ago and said that he’s got some good news for you.
What did you say that this weird new fruit is called; it’s really sweet.
When the ref called a foul on our teammate Rob, the coach was furious.
***
Teaching word: house
That empty house looks like it might be haunted.
I like to get the outside of our house repainted about every four years.
The hail storm did some major damage to the roof of the house next door to us.
***
Teaching word: very
I’d very much like to go walking in the park this afternoon.
I don’t like that diner’s meat dishes much, but their vegetables and desserts are very good.
You look very tired; can you go to bed early?
***
Teaching word: think
I think that I’ll read this mystery novel for my next book.
If you think really hard, I bet that you’ll remember where you put it.
Our teacher said, “Part of my job is to help you learn how to think deeply.”
***
Teaching word: three
Our daughter will turn three tomorrow, and she’s excited about her birthday party.
The coach said to us, “Go run three laps around the track.”
At our county fair, my mom’s won a blue ribbon for her cooking in three different years.”
***
Teaching word: us
Dad, we think that we’re ready for you to teach us how to ride a bike now.
Look Mom, the cat made that mess in the bathroom, not us!
A lot of us in our class at school have nasty colds right now.
***
Teaching word: lots
Dad, this afternoon I got lots of mosquito bites while I was at day camp.
Children, you’ll find lots more food in the kitchen if you want seconds.
They’re going to build eight houses on those empty lots at the end of our neighborhood.
***
Teaching word: home
Since I’m the team’s pitcher in today’s baseball game, I hope that no one hits a home run off of me!
I’m having a great time, and I wish that I didn’t have to go home right now.
As Mrs. Peters left our house, she said to our mom, “Peggy, you have such a beautiful home!”
***
Teaching word: help
Dad, can you help me with my homework?
Let’s help Mom clear the dishes off of the table.
There’s a “help wanted” sign in the ice cream shop down the street.
***
Teaching word: take
On your trip, you can’t take any more than what will fit inside of this suitcase.
The alien got out of its spaceship and said, “Take me to your leader.”
I’m not as ready as I should be to take this math test.
***
Teaching word: water
I need an ice cold drink of water.

I haven’t had much to eat today, so I’m starving!
I wonder how much money that rock star makes.
I know that they love each other very much.
***
Teaching word: cat
Does your cat have long hair or short hair?
Why is the cat meowing so much?
That saxophone player is one cool cat!
***
Teaching word: many
Dad, how many times did you get into trouble when you were a kid?
I can’t tell you how many free throws I practiced on the basketball court today.
There aren’t many things that scare me, but please don’t let a spider get anywhere near me!
***
Teaching word: dog
Who in their right mind would name their dog “Fido?”
I can’t stand our neighbor’s yappy little dog!
Whew, I’m dog-tired after hiking up and down these hills all day!
***
Teaching word: dad
My dad is an expert at cooking great stuff on the grill.
Mom, on our fishing trip, Dad pulled in the biggest catfish that I’ve ever seen!
Come on, Dad; there weren’t any dinosaurs around when you were a kid!
***
Teaching word: right
In baseball, I can bat right-handed or left-handed.
I have to admit that you were right and I was wrong about this.
Kids, it’s time for you to come in for dinner right away!
***
Teaching word: asked
I asked Dad if I could borrow the car, and he just laughed at me.
Mom said to our waiter, “I’m sorry, but I asked for ranch dressing on my salad.”
When I sat on Santa’s lap, I asked for more Legos for Christmas.

Teaching word: food
Mom yelled, “Come and get it while the food is still good and hot!”
Our collie wouldn’t eat the new brand of dog food that Dad had just bought.
It was very busy at our church’s food pantry today.
***
Teaching word: still
The air was so still that there was barely a ripple on the lake’s surface.
Is Betty still your girlfriend?
She said to her grandson, “Paul, can you please sit still for just a minute?”
***
Teaching word: can’t
There’s so much fog out here that I can’t even see the car that’s right in front of me!
I can’t find my wallet; have you seen it?
Jill exclaimed, “I can’t believe that we’re going to get to go to the Taylor Swift concert!”

It will probably take about ten minutes to saw off this big dead tree branch.
I saw a baby eagle in its nest today!
When I saw a big flash of lightning, I ran straight into our house.

A big oak tree ate my kite this afternoon.
We have to cut down that dead tree in our back yard.
***

Let’s go on a picnic this Saturday.
Our teacher said, “Class, let’s head to the library quietly, please.”
My weird brother said, “Let’s see if our dog will eat any fruits or vegetables.”

When Alan comes over to eat, we have to be careful, because he’s allergic to nuts.
My best friend is smart; he’s always beating me when we play chess.

If all you eat is junk food, you’ll get fat.
We asked our waiter, “What’s the best thing to eat on your menu?”
In our family, we eat dinner right at six o’clock every night.
***
Teaching word: tell
Dad, please tell me a funny story tonight when you put me to bed.
Don’t tell anyone my little secret, all right.
Can you tell that I’ve lost ten pounds over the last two months?
***
Teaching word: been
Well, hey there; how have you been lately?
The dog has been running around chasing squirrels for the last five minutes.
We haven’t been to the beach in the last couple of years, and I really miss that.
***
Teaching word: those
Those French fries are cold now, and they don’t taste good anymore.
I wonder what school those students who have uniforms on go to.
Look at those monkeys that are swinging from branch to branch.
***
Teaching word: away
You’ll want to stay away from that dog; he can be pretty mean.
Dad, how long will you be away on your business trip?
Let’s get away from here for a few days and take a short vacation.
***
Teaching word: hard
For about the last three hours, I’ve been hard at work cleaning out the garage.
This pear isn’t even close to ripe; it’s as hard as a rock.
Our history test today was really hard.
***

Uh-oh, I just dropped my banana on the floor.
Oh my, I had no idea that it was going to be so cold out here.
Oh, by the way, did I tell you that I saw Mrs. Jennings at the mall?
***
Teaching word: took
Well, you certainly took your sweet time getting here; you’re almost an hour late!
I took Lucy to the dentist today, and she didn’t have any cavities!
When I took the yo-yo from my sister to try it out, she stomped off angrily.
***
Teaching word: first
My first-grade teacher is super-nice!
I was the first in my family to go to college.
That food looks pretty weird; how about you try it first?

My meal tonight was much better than it was the first time that we tried this restaurant.
I’m taller than my older brother by two inches.
Tomorrow’s weather is supposed to be much better than today’s.
***
Teaching word: after
After the game’s over, let’s go to a steakhouse for dinner.
We can go take a long walk after the rain stops.
You’ll see lots of lightning bugs outside after it gets dark.
***
Teaching word: must
You must be exhausted after your long day of travel.
Look way over there; that must be Monty, because no one else has a head of hair like that!
Dottie, you must read this book; it’s just the kind of thriller that you love.
***
Teaching word: looked
Boris was so hot and sweaty that he looked like he’d just gotten out of the shower.
Mom looked beautiful in her new evening gown.
I looked for my cell phone all over the house, but I didn’t find it.
***
Teaching word: last
At last, I finally got a good grade on a science test!
Could the last person leaving the room please turn off all of the lights?
This new plant isn’t going to last very long if you don’t water it regularly.
***
Teaching word: they’re
I asked the Smiths where they’ll be driving to, and they said that they’re going to the beach.
You’re probably looking for the crackers; they’re in the kitchen cabinet above the microwave.
I have no idea what’s going on next door, but they’re surely making lots of noise!
***
Teaching word: need
Mom, I don’t need your help with this; I can do this on my own.
I need a few things from the grocery; can you stop there on your way home?
I’ll need to study harder than ever for the upcoming social studies test.
***
Teaching word: once
I love the saying, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!”
Don’t you wonder how many children’s stories start off with “Once upon a time?”
I’ve eaten alligator only once; it tasted like a combination of chicken and fish.
***
Teaching word: there’s
There’s an ice cream truck driving around the neighborhood!
Now there’s a good idea to fix this problem; let’s do it!
Look, there’s the Smiths’ dog; she’s been missing for three days.

I might go to that new Avengers movie this weekend.
If there’s some decent wind today, I might go out and fly a kite.
For Halloween, I might wear my pumpkin pajamas as my costume.

The music at the concert that we went to last night was great.
That new barbecue restaurant has great food.
Our neighbor has a gigantic dog; it’s a Great Dane.
***
Teaching word: why
Mom, why do I have to brush my teeth twice a day?
My wife suggested that we go out to dinner, and I said, “Why not?”
Dad, why aren’t there any dinosaurs any more?
***
Teaching word: work
I’ve been called into work for an emergency meeting on Saturday morning.
Dad, I can’t get this toy to work; can you help me?
Mom, I’m going up to my bedroom to work on my book report.
***
Teaching word: find
I’m trying to find my car keys; I can’t remember where I put them.
I find that I’m nervous when I have to speak in front of a large group of people.
What did you find out about sharks in your science class today?
***
Teaching word: through
Whew, I’m finally through with today’s chores!
Go through that door, and you’ll find the restrooms.
Please go through this box and throw out anything that you don’t need to keep.
***
Teaching word: around
I’m going around the block to take the dog for a walk.
Look, the cat’s going around and around trying to bite its own tail!
I’m going to take the boat around the lake to look for a good place to stop to fish.
***
Teaching word: found
Thank goodness; my coat was, indeed, in the school’s lost and found.
I found that I was gaining weight because I wasn’t exercising enough.
The pirates in this book never found the treasure chest.

I ate most of the food on my plate.
She’s taller than most of her friends.
In that long-running TV series, I liked season three the most.

I ran downstairs to see who had rung the doorbell.
She ran around the track for about a half hour.
Happy tears ran down her face as her daughter was getting married.
***
Teaching word: something
There’s something about that old house that’s really creepy.
Eddy, tell me something about your school day.
Ouch, there’s something really annoying inside my left shoe.
***
Teaching word: lot
I spent a lot of my weekend doing spring cleaning.
Sorry, but I don’t know a lot about chemistry, so I can’t help you with your homework.
Someone finally bought that empty lot at the end of our street.
***
Teaching word: red
What goes better with this blouse, this red or this pink lipstick?
A fire-engine-red car raced past us on the highway.
She was so embarrassed that her face turned bright red.
***
Teaching word: again
Drat, I broke the tip of my pencil again.
Let’s meet again in a week or so and see how things are going.
Haven’t I told you again and again to think before you speak?
***
Teaching word: kids
Those kids down the street surely love playing with their new puppy!
Both of our kids are now in middle school.
The teacher said, “All of the kids in my class seemed to love today’s field trip to the zoo”.
***
Teaching word: put
Please put those groceries on the counter by the sink.
I need to put out the trash; it really stinks!
I’m going to put on another pair of pants; these are just too tight.
***
Teaching word: head
I just looked at your clock, and it’s time for me to head home.
This hat is too tight on my head for me to wear it.
When we get back to the head of the trail, we will have walked three miles.
***
Teaching word: best
Mom, that’s the best homemade ice cream that you’ve ever made!
We let Suzie’s best friend come here for a sleepover last night.
Without a doubt, she’s the best player on our field hockey team.
***
Teaching word: never
Come on, Todd; you should never chew with your mouth open!
Never again will I ever babysit for that kid!
I can never eat shellfish; if I do, I break out in an awful rash.
***
Teaching word: place
I’ll place this cheese tray on the coffee table.
That place next to the main library serves the best pizza!
I need to find a quiet place around here to make an important phone call.
***
Teaching word: set
Let’s get them a nice set of cookware for their wedding gift.
Please set that down carefully over here.
Are you all set to go on your vacation?

I’ll have what’s left of my dinner for lunch tomorrow.
We’ll need to turn left at the next stop sign.
Oh, I didn’t realize that you’re left-handed.
***
Teaching word: fish
How many fish did you catch at the lake today?
I’ll cook the fish on the grill tonight.
I watched him fish for some coins in his pocket.
***

258 Sentences
MORE Most-frequent-word activities for the children!
For even more practice with these crucial-to-know 200 words, here are 258 additional sentences to read and practice with. This is different than the above sentences, which each focused on just one single teaching word per sentence. THESE sentences are made up of ONLY the top-200 words, so in this case, the children ARE expected to be able to read EVERY word in EVERY sentence. In a sense, this is a review activity to help you assess whether the children have really mastered all of the 200 words or not. Since these sentences contain ONLY the 200 words, if they have truly mastered those words, then all of these sentences should be easy and automatic for them to read, despite the fact that the 200 words will show up in a completely random fashion for them. (Note: each of the 200 words is exposed to the students at least 5 times in different sentences.)
