Would you like a little more ice cream?

There is more milk in the refrigerator if you would like some.

My cat is very little.

My dog wants more water to drink.

It would be fun to go to the park now.

What would you like to do next, when the movie is over?

I need more time to eat all of my dinner.

Please put these eggs into the refrigerator.

It would be fun to go play in the woods.

We had fun at the zoo this morning.

Get me some ice from the refrigerator.

I see a little brown rabbit in the yard.

Would you like a little more toast and jam?

It is fun to go see a good movie.

Please put this hat into that little box.

Please put some more ice into this glass.

I saw those red birds in the yard fly into the woods.

I need a little glass of water.

Those two little white cats are ours.

I need more time to clean my room.

That black dog in the yard is not ours.

Go run into the woods and see if our dogs are there.

Pam and Sam will have fun at the zoo.

These eggs in the refrigerator are old, and they are not good to eat.

Get the cake from the refrigerator and put it on the table.

There is a little orange bug on my leg.

I would like to run as fast as a rabbit.

Would you like to go to the park with Pam?

Would you like one more glass of apple juice?

Get one more box of cookies when you go to the store.

Can you put this in the refrigerator for me?

Now that we are at the beach, I want to go jump into the water.

We had fun at the beach this morning.

We have bacon and sausage in the refrigerator.

It is not fun when I have to clean my room.

Can you put this plate into the dishwasher for me?

This fork is not clean; put it into the dishwasher.

Put some ice into that green glass.

There is a little refrigerator in my room at the hospital.

There is a refrigerator in our room at school.

I had fun at the gym at school this morning.

The dog that you see in their yard is ours.

Did the Smiths have fun at the zoo?

Do you have fun when you play with your kittens?

The house next to that white house is ours.

Those two cats in the yard are not ours.

The box next to that refrigerator is not ours.

The food on that table is not ours.

Is that blue umbrella ours?

Can you come to my house to play?

Come over here and let me see your new dress.

Can you come to see the new movie with me?

Let the dogs out of the house so that they can play in the yard.

Let me see your new kittens.

Mom, will you let me go to the park with Pam?

Dad, will you let me have a cookie now?

I can’t come over to play now; I have to clean my room.

Sam, let me show you how to do that.

My mom will let me come to your house to play now.

Come over here and see this black snake.

It’s time to eat, so all of you can come to the kitchen table now.

There is a dog in our yard; where did it come from?

Will you let Pam come to our house now; we can play in my room.

Let the puppies out into the yard.

Come to my house and we can play in the woods.

I went to the store yesterday and got more cat food.

They went to see a good movie last night.

We went to the zoo this afternoon, and it was fun.

This afternoon, we will go to the park.

What restaurant did you go to last night?

I got fish for my lunch at school today.

Yesterday was a good day to play in the park.

It was a good day to go to the beach yesterday.

I’m happy that we didn’t go to the beach yesterday; it was a bad day to be there.

At last, Mom and Dad let us get a new pet.

Their last name is “the Smiths.”

What is the last day of school?

What night is it that we will go to see the movie?

This afternoon, we will go to the barber.

What did you have for lunch this afternoon?

Today, I will go run in the woods.

Can we go to see the new movie today?

What did you do at school today?

When we went to the park this afternoon, we saw a fox in the woods.

One day, when I grow up, I want to be a doctor.

I got up at six yesterday morning.

I will see you at three this afternoon.

At night, my dog likes to run in the yard.

Yesterday afternoon, Pam and Sam went to the zoo.

Today, a doctor will come to our school.

I got angry at Sam today.

I got food on this dress.

I got to eat some good fish at the new restaurant last night.

I got a big box of cookies at the store this afternoon.

When did you get to see the new movie? I got to see it last night.

Who wants this last cookie in the box?

I got an “A” at school today!

Today is the last day that we can see the movie.

Sam went to the park this afternoon.

Yesterday, I went to see the doctor.

What did you do at the beach yesterday?

Today is the last day that I am six years old.

This afternoon, we got to see the new bear at the zoo.

Yesterday, we went to a new play, and then we went to a restaurant.

Last night, the Smiths had us over to their house to eat dinner.

At night, I don’t like to go into the woods.

Mom, what day can you come to school with me?

We have to let our puppies out of the house for ten minutes at night.

What day will the Smiths come to see our new house?

Yesterday, we were at the beach all day.

Mom says that you need to go to your room now.

I’m happy when Mom says that it’s time for dinner.

Lesson 11

just, minute, too, much, down, love, could, about, by

I’ll be there in just a minute.

That’s just too much food for me to eat.

Thank you very much for the box of cookies.

I’ll have just one cookie, thank you.

I’ll just sit down in this chair for a minute.

Put that box down on the table.

I see a bug down on the rug.

Don’t you just love that movie?

I love my pretty kittens.

We love to run at the park on a pretty day.

Pam is in love with Sam!

That’s too much milk to put into the bowl for the cats.

Don’t eat too much food when you go to the zoo.

That’s just a little bug on your leg; you will be okay.

You have come here just in time to see the movie.

Just like you, I love to run fast, too.

Give me just a minute, and I will come over to your house.

There is too much water in this soup.

Put that plate down on the table.

Could you put that down over here, please?

Could I go over to play with Sam now?

I could see that you were sad when the movie was over.

Could you please get me a glass of ice water?

When I was ten years old, I could not run as fast as you can.

Could you clean up your room by dinner time?

I like Pam, too; she is fun to play with.

Could you show me where a good barber is?

I don’t know much about cats; our pets are dogs.

What I have on this plate is about all that I can eat for dinner.

I want to know about your day at the zoo.

Don’t run too fast, okay?

We will have dinner at about 6:00 PM.

What do you know about the Smiths?

We can go to the restaurant in about ten minutes.

What is that movie about?

Mom, could we have lunch at 1:00 PM today?

Don’t drink your water too fast.

Pam wants more soup, and I would like some more soup, too.

I love to eat ice cream and cake.

The cat needs to get down from the tree.

Get down from the table and go sit in a chair.

Could you get us some eggs at the store?

I could be at your house in about ten minutes.

I would love to go to that movie with you.

She is just about ten years old.

About what time will the Smiths come to our house for dinner?

Don’t you love these cookies?

I’ll come down to dinner in two minutes.

I had too much to eat at dinner.

I love my mom and dad very much!

Get that box down and see what is in it.

Come down here now; it is time for dinner!

Do you know how much sugar is in this drink?

You didn’t know that I love you?

There is not much to eat on your plate; please have some more if you would like to!

Please put that down over there and come into the kitchen.

home, tonight, back, door, beautiful, bed

“When will you come home tonight?” “I’ll be back home by 10:00 PM.”

Let the dog out of the back door so that he can play in the yard.

Put that box down by the back door.

The Smiths have a beautiful home.

There is a good movie on TV tonight.

You need to come home at 6:00 PM; that’s when we will eat dinner.

The Smiths have a very clean home.

Tonight, you need to go to bed by 9:00 PM.

Tonight, we will go to a restaurant for dinner.

Put this box on your bed.

It’s a beautiful day; I want to go to the park.

What is on TV tonight?

My home is just five minutes from your home.

It’s time for you to go home now, Sam.

I need to go back to the house to get the food.

I need a glass of water; then I will go back to bed.

Pam and Sam, it’s time for you to go to bed.

In the back of our home, we have a big yard.

By the time that I get back home from school, the puppies will want to play with me.

The puppies went out into the back yard.

Mom, that is a beautiful new dress.

The flower in the vase by the kitchen sink needs some water.

Pam, the flower on your dress is beautiful.

There is a big squirrel by the back door.

I’ll be back from the store with our food in about ten minutes.

I will clean up my room tonight.

Pam is a beautiful girl.

That’s a beautiful vase on your kitchen table.

There is a bug on the rug by my bed.

There is a black snake by the back door.

Don’t jump on your bed!

Put this glass of water on the little table by your bed.

Can you see that beautiful bird in the woods?

It’s a beautiful afternoon, and I want to go play with the dogs in the woods.

Do you see that brown cat by the big tree in our back yard?

Put this bowl of water for the cats out by the back door.

Mom, I got food on my beautiful new dress!

It will be beautiful on the beach tonight.

Sam, I will get angry if I see you jump on your bed.

I would like some apple juice at dinner tonight.

Tonight, we need to run the dishwasher.

Dad, is it okay if the pets jump up on my bed?

Dad, tonight can the kittens be in the bed with me?

The Smiths live next door to us.

There is a very big glass door at the hospital.

Put this milk on the back of the refrigerator door.

At night, please let the puppies out by the back door so that they can run for ten minutes.

The umbrella is by the kitchen door.

man, baby, say, words

Who is that man over there?

Do you know that man who is by the big tree?

That man next to the green door is my father.

That man is in love with Pam.

Is that man a vet?

It’s time for you to get out of bed!

That baby boy can say ten words now.

Is that man a good barber?

They named their new baby boy Sam.

The Smiths named their new baby girl Pam.

They just had a beautiful new baby girl.

Sam, don’t be a little baby; get out there and run fast!

Did you see how fast that man can run?

What did she say?

What did Dad say to you?

I just don’t want to play with Pam today; I will say that I must clean my room.

Did you say that you like fish?

If you say that to Sam, I will be very angry at you.

There was a man at the park who could run very fast.

I do not know those words.

Did you say that you like this movie?

Did Mom say to Dad that we could go to a restaurant tonight?

That baby can’t say “I want to go to the zoo.”

You must say “please” and “thank you” when you go over to see the Smiths!

That baby likes apple juice.

The baby must come with us to the store.

Do you know what they will name their new baby?

She didn’t know those big words.

Those are bad words to say!

Did you know that those are not good words to say?

Dad said some very bad words when he saw the cat eat food from his plate on the table.

Our mama cat just had new baby kittens.

It would be good if our pets could say words!

That man said words that I don’t know.

When I was at the beach today, I saw a man who had four dogs with him!

The doctor said words to Mom that I do not know at all.

I want to know big words, like “refrigerator” and “umbrella.”

Lesson 12

off, take, work

Mom, get this big bug off of my leg!

Take this bowl off of the table and put it by the sink.

Dad, will you take me to a movie?

Take your hat off and I’ll put it on that chair.

I need to take the pets to the vet.

Get the kitty off of the table!

The dog is not clean; get him off of the bed!

Please take this big box from me.

What work do you do? I am a barber.

I work at the vet.

Do you work at the store?

I will go out to run so that I can work off this food.

I will go work out at the gym today.

I don’t like this hat, so I will take if off.

I would like to work at the hospital.

I will work for ten more minutes, and then I will go home.

No, you can’t take your sheep with you to school!

I will take off from work at 6:00 PM.

I can work from home today.

Take this plate and put it into the dishwasher.

I don’t know if that will work or not.

It will take too much time to do that.

Take that off of the table and put it here on the rug.

I need a rag to get this water off of my hat.

make, made

Mom, will you make a cake for me?

Dad, I want to show you what I made at school today; do you like it?

Pam, can you please make up your bed now?

Dad said, “I made a pot of soup for dinner.”

Mom said, “I can make you a new dress for your play at school.”

I made that bird fly off of that tree.

Can you make your horse jump high up?

It made me angry when Sam said that!

If you run, can you make it over to my house in ten minutes?

It made me happy when Pam went to the movie with me.

Pam and Sam, I’ll make your lunch now.

We made it to the restaurant on time.

No, Pam, you can’t put on make-up; you are just six years old!

We made the dogs go out and run in the yard.

What will you make at school today?

Who made these cookies for us, Dad?

What do you want me to make you for breakfast?

Mom, who made this beautiful dress for me?

How did you make that so fast?

I made up my bed in three minutes.

way

When you say, “Way up,” you could say “Very high up.”

Our cat is way up in that tree.

Do you see two red birds way up in that tree?

What way do you want me to go to come to your house?

That is not a good way to make that work; do it like this.

On the way home from work, can you get some eggs at the store?

Don’t go that way; it will take you more time to get there; go this way.

When I was at the beach, I saw a boy who was way out in the water.

Do you know the way to the Smiths?

There is way too much water in the sink.

On the way to school this morning, I saw a fox in the woods.

I see a bear way over there, in the woods!

came

Sam came to the park with me today.

By the way, do you know the Smiths, who live next door to us?

Can you please show me the way to get to the library?

“What time did you get home last night?” “I came home at 10:00 PM.”

The Smiths came to our house for dinner last night.

Are you happy that I came to see you?

This morning, Sam came to our house so that we could play in the yard.

I came to your house to give you some cookies that my mom just made.

We came here to the beach yesterday.

I came up to your room to get your green dress.

I came here to the zoo today to see the new baby bear.

I came into the kitchen to get some ice cream.

long

It is a long way to the Smiths.

How long will it take to do that?

How long will it take for us to get to the zoo if we run fast?

This dress is too long for me.

I need that long box to put this in.

How long is that black snake?

We are very happy to see you; how long will you be here?

I will not be here for a long time.

I long for a big bowl of ice cream!

It will not be long now; the doctor can see you in two minutes.

It will not take me a long time to clean my room.

feel, well, oh

I feel well, thank you.

How do you feel today?

I don’t feel very well now; I had too much to eat.

Oh yes, I would love a bowl of ice cream!

Oh no, I got food on my new white dress.

Oh boy, Dad says that we will go to the zoo today!

Oh boy, I got food on the rug, and Mom will be angry with me.

I could make fish soup tonight; how would you feel about that?

Oh, by the way, Mom, I got an “A” at school today.

Oh my, there is a big red bug on my leg!

How did you feel about that movie?

Please get some water from the well.

Well now Sam, what do you have to show me?

When you feel well, we will go out to a restaurant for dinner.

Oh no you don’t; put that down and go up to your room and go to bed.

How well do you feel today; is it okay for you go to school?

I know that I will feel well in a day or two.

“Mom, I got food on the rug.” “Oh well, I’m not angry; we can clean it up.”

Oh, I have to go home now; I said to my mom that I would clean my room.

I didn’t feel well this morning, but I’m okay now.

I feel good about what I made for dinner tonight.

Do you feel good about your day at school today?

Well, if that’s what you want, I’ll get it for you.

Oh no, I just made Pam angry with me.

Oh my, do you see that beautiful big bird in the water?

look, think, things

Look over there; could that be a fox?

Mom, would this dress look good on me?

Dad, can we look at this movie on TV tonight?

Don’t look at me like that!

Look in the dishwasher and see if the blue plate is in there.

What would this room look like if the rug was blue, and not red?

Look out; there is a big snake next to you!

Would I look okay in that dress; what do you think?

I think that I’ll make a pot of soup for dinner tonight.

What do you think about this new restaurant; is it good?

I think that I’ll go to the park this afternoon.

What are those things in the yard next door?

Can you put these things in that box?

Can you take these things into the kitchen?

I think that I got an “A” at school today.

Do you think that you can clean up your room by 3:00 PM this afternoon?

I must be in love; I think about Pam all the time!

We think that Sam is a very good boy.

I need to look for my hat in your room.

You look like you are very happy today!

Look that way, and I think that you will see the red bird that I see.

Do you think that bird is a robin?

What things will a sheep think about all day long?

I need to take these things up to my room.

What things do I need to get at the store?

I am happy that these things are not ours!

I can give some things to Pam; one of them is this blue dress.

What things do the Smiths have that you would like to have?

Please take these things over to the Smiths.

I’ll take these things to work with me today.

lots

I want to eat lots of these cookies.

I could eat lots more of this soup.

I saw lots of birds high up in that big tree.

I think that there will be lots of people at the park this afternoon.

Slow down; you have lots of time to eat your lunch.

There were lots of people at the beach this morning.

I saw lots of fish in the water.

She likes to put lots of jam on her toast.

My cats will drink lots of milk in the morning.

I had lots of work to do in the house yesterday.

+++++

Lesson 13

asked, many, kids

Dad asked me, “How many kids do you know at your school?”

Will the kids be angry if we say that they have to go to bed now?

How many cookies will you let me eat?

I think that the kids will love this new movie.

How many cats do they have?

Do you know how many kids the Smiths have?

I think that the kids are in the kitchen.

There were not many dogs at the park this afternoon.

How many kids will you let come over to play with me?

Those kids love to run in the woods with their puppies.

Can you see how many eggs we have in the refrigerator?

When we were at the beach, we saw many fish in the water.

I saw many kids from my school at the zoo today.

I can put many things in this big box.

There were lots of kids at the library this morning.

How many words do you think those kids know?

mouse

I think that I saw a mouse in the kitchen.

My cat will run fast to get a mouse.

Look, a mouse is by the sink!

If there is a mouse next to my mom, she will jump up on the table.

We saw a big, long mouse at school today.

I don’t think that a mouse will eat sausage.

Is a mouse as fast as a squirrel or a rabbit?

Mom will get angry if there is a mouse in the house.

Sam has a pet mouse, and I don’t like it.

Mom asked Dad to get the mouse in their room and to take it out in the back yard and put it into the woods.

each

I have a cookie for each of you.

What would each of you like for breakfast?

Each time that I see her, she is angry with her cat.

Each girl in this room is ten years old.

What do each of you want to do today?

Get me each plate that’s in the dishwasher.

Each bird that I can see in the yard is a robin.

Each flower in this vase is beautiful.

Each room in her house is very clean.

Each night, I go to bed at 9:00 PM.

I asked her if she would like some more soup.

Pam asked Sam if he could come over to play.

Mom asked Dad to take her to the store.

Mom asked me if I would like eggs for breakfast.

Pam asked her mom if she could get a new green dress.

I just asked Dad if we could go to the beach today, and he said yes!

I asked Sam how old he is.

I think that she asked for some more milk.

I asked Dad if I could go to bed at 10:00 PM tonight.

part

I’ll eat just part of this apple.

There are lots of people at that part of the beach.

Could I have a part of your cookie?

I’ll give part of my lunch to Sam.

Pancakes were part of my big breakfast.

I see a bird in the part of that tree that’s very high up.

To me, a fox can look like it is part dog and part cat.

I’ll go to the part of the park where I can run for a long time.

I’ll put some jam on just part of my toast.

There was a ten-minute part of the movie that I didn’t like at all.

they’re

“Where are the Smiths?” “They’re in their back yard.”

“Are the kids at home?” “No, they’re at the park.”

“Can Pam and Sam come over to play?” “No, they’re not at home now.”

“Can you see those birds?” “No, they’re too high up in that tree.”

You will want to see the new puppies at the Smiths; they’re beautiful.

“Didn’t the Smiths go to the beach?” “No, they’re at home now.”

“Did you get more eggs at the store?” “Yes, they’re in the refrigerator.”

I don’t see the kids, but I think that they’re at the gym.

“Where are the kids?” “They’re about five minutes from home.”

Those are not your cookies; they’re ours.

tell

Tell me about your day at school.

Tell me what you want to eat for dinner.

Can you tell how old I am?

I can’t tell if Pam is angry with me or not.

I’ll tell you what I saw at the zoo this afternoon.

I can’t tell what is in that box.

Don’t tell Dad what I just did!

I can’t tell you what flower this is.

Sam is four years old, and he can tell time.

I need to tell Mom that this glass is not clean.

let’s

Let’s go to a fish restaurant for dinner tonight.

Let’s go to the park with the dogs this afternoon.

Let’s play at my house today.

Let’s see if Dad will take us to the zoo today.

Let’s run fast for ten minutes.

Let’s jump into the water over there.

Let’s drink some apple juice for breakfast.

Let’s tell Mom that we want her to make a cake.

Let’s go to the kitchen and get some juice out of the refrigerator.

Let’s go work out at the gym.

hard

This is very hard work!

It’s hard to do this!

Yesterday, the work was hard at school.

I’ll show you how hard it is to make those things work.

It’s hard to run very fast for ten minutes.

I think that it’s hard to jump up high.

Do you think that it’s hard to see those birds up in that tree?

It must be hard for a bird to make a nest.

An ox can do very hard work.

Some people are hard to please.

I will work hard today at school.

he’s

He’s my dad, and his name is Sam.

Did you know that he’s got a new pet dog?

I think that he’s a good boy all the time.

He’s with the puppies in the woods.

He’s angry when he can’t eat what he wants to.

Sam can’t come over to play; he’s got some yard work to do.

He’s on the way, and he will be here in five minutes.

I know that he’s sad that he can’t go to the zoo.

Oh no, he’s up in that tree and he can’t jump down.

I know where Dad went; he’s at the gas station.

called

Pam called me a bad name!

Mom just called and said that we have to come home now.

What are those big things called?

This movie is called, “Don’t Run Too Fast.”

Some man called and asked if Dad was home.

Sam is in his room, and Mom just called up to him to come down to the kitchen.

I don’t know what that TV show is called.

I don’t feel well, so Mom called the school and said that I could not go there today.

Who is that girl who called out my name?

I called the restaurant, and we can eat there at 6:00 PM.

ran

When you called, I ran home as fast as I could.

She ran fast and got home in time for dinner.

When I was at the park, I ran for ten minutes.

She ran in the yard with the puppies.

Pam ran about as fast as Sam did.

The girl ran when she saw a big black dog.

The squirrel ran when it saw my cat come out of the back door.

They ran to that tree way over there in one minute.

They ran hard at the beach today.

They ran so much today that they could eat a big dinner.

When lunch was over, Pam ran up to her room to play.

Sam ran next to Pam for four minutes.

right

My right leg has a bug on it.

You are right about that.

Come to the table for dinner right now!

Put that right over there on the green chair.

You are right about how many years old she is.

Right about now, he will come in the back door.

I was right; our dog likes bacon very much.

I was right about this, and you were not.

The doctor said, “This is not so bad; you will be all right in a day or two.”

Pam said to me, “Right in back of you, I see a long black snake.”

You think that you are right about things all the time, but you are not!

I think that bird will fly right over you.

I will give those things right back to you.

help

Can you please help me clean my room?

I will help you take that box out of the house.

I need some help with this, please.

If you help me, I will give you my cookies.

Pam said, “Help me!” when she could not get down from the tree.

I will help that turtle get to the water.

Sam likes to help people all the time.

I want to help you; tell me what I can do.

I don’t know these words; can you please help me?

We had to clean the kitchen this morning, and Pam was lots of help.

+++++

Lesson 14

other

You can have one or the other of these two cookies.

I think that I would like to sit at that other table, please.

Do you know that other boy over there?

This is not a good hat for tonight; I’ll get my other one that’s in my room.

That other store will have the food that I need to get for our dinner tonight.

If you go the other way, you can take these cookies to the Smiths.

The other night, I saw a good movie on TV.

The other day, I had lunch with Pam.

The doctor said, “Please sit in that other chair.”

The other vase on that table needs more water.

took

Mom said, “I took Sam to the doctor this morning.”

We took our dog Sam to the vet yesterday.

Mom, I took that big box from the kitchen up to my room, just like you asked me to.

We took our dogs with us to the beach.

It took me a very long time to clean up my room.

It took me just three minutes to make up my bed.

At the restaurant, it took a long time for them to get our food to us from the kitchen.

I took Pam to the hospital so that she could see her mom there.

I took this to school today to show the other kids.

It took that turtle a long time to get over to the water.

there’s

Oh no, there’s a bug in my soup!

There’s a brown cat at our back door.

There’s no way that you can do that in just ten minutes and do it well.

There’s a big breakfast for you on the kitchen table.

Oh, there’s my green dress; I didn’t know that it was in this room.

Do you know if there’s some apple juice in the refrigerator?

There’s a pretty new kitty at the house next to the Smiths.

There’s a way to do this fast; let me show you how.

I can’t see how there’s a way to make this thing work.

Oh, there’s Sam; he’s by that big tree over there.

why

Mom, why are you so angry at me?

Well Sam, why did you do that to Pam?

Why do I have to dress up to go to the Smiths?

I know what I want to do; why don’t we go to a movie this afternoon?

Why do cats like milk and cream so much?

Why are there so many people here today?

Let me tell you why that will not work.

The little boy asked, “Why can’t people fly like birds?”

Dad, why don’t we have time to go get some ice cream?

Pam, why are you so sad right now?

job

If you do a good job on this here in the kitchen, I will help you clean your room.

My job is to give the cat a bowl of milk each morning.

“What is your job?” “I am a barber.”

“What is her job?” “She is a doctor.”

I think that job is way too hard for me to do.

I can’t do that job if I don’t know how to do it; you have to show me how.

It’s your job to make up your bed each morning.

When I grow up, I want a job where I can help other people.

My job is to put each dish into the dishwasher and then clean the kitchen table.

I would like for your job today to be to put water into each vase in the house.

small

Can I please eat one small cookie?

Mom put a small apple in my lunch box today.

This dress is now too small for me.

I would like a small bowl of soup with my lunch.

You are too small to help me with that very big box of things.

Oh my, the new baby kittens are so small!

Could I please have a small glass of water?

That small turtle is very slow.

I have a small job for you to do; it will take you just five minutes.

You can put that small plate into the dishwasher.

lot

There’s a lot of water in the kitchen sink.

Oh my, you have put a lot of food on your plate!

I saw a lot of people who I know at the zoo today.

At school today, a lot of people did not feel well.

A lot of birds are up in that tree.

I feel like I could eat a lot of ice cream right now.

For this soup that I will make, I will need a lot of cream to put in it.

I see a lot of fish here in the water.

I will need a lot of help from other people if I am to do this job fast.

There is not a lot of food in our refrigerator right now.

best

Can you show me the best way to do this job?

I did the best that I could do at school today.

I have the very best dog for a pet.

I will get the very best baby food for Pam.

It’s best if you go on to bed right now.

What is the best way to go to the Smiths from here?

This is the best cake that I have made in a very long time.

For me, the best breakfast will have pancakes.

I think that the best thing to drink is orange juice.

That’s the best restaurant that I know of.

away

Dad, I don’t want you to have to go away for so long!

That little boy said that he wants to run away from home.

Pam, run away from that bug, fast!

My mom is away from the house right now, but she will be back in ten minutes.

Dad, could we go away from here and get a house at the beach?

I was away from work yesterday afternoon.

Sam, come over here right away!

When the cat is away, the mouse will play!

Their house is a long way away from our house.

It is a long way away, and it will take a lot of time to get there.

once

Once you clean your room up, you can go out to play.

We went to that beach once, and we had a good time.

Once, I put a black snake into a box and took it to school with me.

The Smiths came to dinner at our house once.

Sam came over to my house to play once, but he was not fun to play with.

Once, there was a bug in my soup, but I did not eat it!

Pam, please come over here at once!

I did that once, and it made Dad angry.

I saw a mouse in our kitchen once.

Once, I had to go to the hospital.

Once we get home, you can have some ice cream.

looked

Last night, Mom looked very pretty with her new dress on.

I looked at the bug on my bed and ran out of my room.

The water at the beach looked beautiful.

The dog looked angry, so I did not go up to it.

We looked at the TV for just ten minutes; the show that was on was very bad.

Dad looked at the dishwasher, but he could not tell why it would not work.

The dinner that Mom made looked very good.

I looked over there like you asked me to do, but I did not see a big red bird.

The fox looked at our cat and our dog, and then it ran away fast!

The kids looked very happy when we were at the zoo today.

than

I like cake more than I like cookies.

I want to play with Sam more than I want to play with Pam.

I want a dog more than I want a cat.

Other than Mom, who wants to go home, we all want to go to the beach.

I like to sit on a chair more than I like to sit on a rug.

I think that I am more happy than Sam is right now.

It will take more than five minutes for me to clean up my room.

I need more than one egg for breakfast.

The Smiths have more pets than we do.

I would be more than happy to help you!

Pam has more to eat for lunch than Sam has.

still

Please go to that chair and sit still.

I know that I had a lot to eat, but I would still like more food.

I still don’t know how to do this, but I will work hard to get it right.

Where we were, the water was very still.

Are you still angry with me; please get over it!

I still think that I’m right about this and that you are not.

I didn’t feel well this morning, but I still went to school.

I still think that when I grow up I want to be a doctor.

I know that this dress is old, but I still like to put it on at home.

I don’t feel well, but I still want to eat dinner.

great

I feel great today!

That was a great movie!

I would like to eat a great big cookie.

We had a great time at the zoo today.

There’s a great big bug on my bed!

Sam came over to play this afternoon, and we had a great time.

I think that this is a great TV show.

I have a lot of yard work to do today, so I want to eat a great big breakfast.

A great big fly is in my soup bowl.

I go to a great barber.

never

I never eat more than I need to.

Never do that to people; it will just make them angry.

I can never eat fish; it will make me feel bad.

I have never called her a bad name!

I never have time to clean my room.

I would never want to be a vet.

I never have a bad time when I go to the zoo.

I have never had a pet snake.

I never see a bear when I go into the woods.

I never need to go to the hospital.

Lesson 15

around

I’ll be home around 5:00 PM.

Don’t let the dog run around in the house.

I’ll look around the house to see where the cat is.

I want to go run around at the park.

You can come over to my house around 2:00 PM.

I think that the dog is around the back of the house.

I looked around your room, but I didn’t see your small umbrella in there.

The dog ran around and around the tree when he looked for the squirrel.

My hat must be around here; I didn’t see it at school today.

Tell me what things are fun to do around here.

plants

These plants need water.

Don’t run into those plants.

How many plants do I need to get at the store?

The plants in your back yard are beautiful.

A rabbit will eat those plants if you put them there.

Those plants don’t look good; I think that they need a lot more water.

We need to have more green plants around the house.

Take this small pot of plants to the kitchen.

Can you take this pot of plants over to the Smiths?

I’ll water these plants this afternoon.

head

There’s a bug on your head.

Will this hat look good on my head?

My head will not feel good if that hat is on it; the hat is too small.

I saw a bird fly right over your head.

That man over there is the head of our school.

If you feel your head, you will see that it is very hard.

Help me to put my dress on over my head.

I need to head home now.

It’s time to head back to the school now.

Let’s head over to that tree and sit down there.

find

Did you find out who the new people are next door?

What did you find out about the school play today?

Did you find your blue hat up in your room?

I find that I am happy when I can run around at the park.

I find that the kids have a good time each time that we go to the beach.

I want to find out if the Smiths will let me come over and play with Pam.

If I find a bug on my bed, I will run out of my room fast.

If I find that there’s some bacon that we didn’t eat from breakfast, I’ll give it to the dog.

I find that these kids can’t sit still for very long.

I find that each time I fly a kite, a tree will “eat” it.

found

I found this spoon on the rug in your room.

Pam found this bug in the kitchen sink.

Mom found a pretty new dress at the store today.

I just found out that Sam is ten years old today.

I found a baby bird in the back yard.

Have you found out if the Smiths are back home?

I found some beautiful plants to grow in our yard.

He found out that fish is not good to eat at breakfast time.

I found a black snake in the woods this afternoon.

Pam said that she could help me, so now I have found out how to do this right!

keep

I found this in the woods; can I keep it?

Keep still for a minute so that I can look at your new dress on you.

You must keep eggs in your refrigerator or they will go bad.

You need to keep these things in your room; please get them out of the kitchen.

We have to keep our cat in the house.

Let’s keep this pot of plants over by that chair.

You can’t keep those things in the house; they’re not clean.

You can’t keep that turtle; take it back into the woods where you found it.

Can we keep the TV on for just the next ten minutes?

The Smiths will keep our pets when we are away from here.

might, Jan, George

I might go over to play with Jan at her house this afternoon.

Mom said that she might make a pot of soup for dinner.

Did you say that you might go to bed at 9:00 PM?

I might like a bowl of ice cream right now.

I might see a rabbit when I go into the woods.

George said that he might like to see that movie.

We might go to the park and run with the dogs.

I might get a drink of water now.

I might clean up my room today.

George said that he might want eggs and bacon for breakfast.

set, ready

Set that box down on the kitchen table.

“Are you all set to go to school?” “Yes, I have all of the things that I need.”

Please set up the TV so that we can see the movie.

Can you help to set the kitchen table for dinner.

Ready; get set; GO!

We have all of the things that we need to take with us, so we are all set to head to the beach.

Put ice in each glass, and then set all of them around the table.

It will take me ten minutes to get this all set up.

Do you know this set of words?

Jan, let me set this down on the rug, and then I’ll come help you.

after

You can see more of the movie after dinner.

The puppies like to run after each other.

After school is over this afternoon, you can have Jan come over to play.

I saw that fast cat run after a squirrel.

After this movie is over, you will need to go right to bed.

After I run the blender for two minutes, the juice will be ready.

After I run the dishwasher, the kitchen will be clean.

After people help you, you need to say “thank you” to them.

Can you go to the store after you go to the barber?

Can I have some ice cream after I eat all of my dinner?

top

At her job, she will work her way to the top.

Is that a squirrel at the top of that tree?

Is that a bug on top of your head.

Look, there’s a kite on top of that house!

I think that movie was a little over the top.

Where we will go to dinner tonight is the top restaurant where we live.

That was the top dog at the dog show.

Oh no, a fly just got on top of my food.

She is the top doctor at the hospital.

You can take this dress up to my room and put it on top of my bed.

thing

If there’s one thing that I know, it’s that I love your mother very much.

Tell me one thing that you would like to do on your day off from work.

Take that thing out of the house right now!

If there’s one thing that will make me angry, it’s when people don’t say “thank you” after I help them.

What is that thing in that old box?

The top thing that you need to do today is clean your room.

That thing is pretty, but I don’t know what it is; do you?

Is that thing in your ice cream a bug?

I will not go in the water with that thing in there; I think that it’s a snake!

One thing that I have to do today is go to the gas station.

through

When you are through with your breakfast, put your plate and glass into the dishwasher.

I saw a fox run through the woods today.

I love to run through the water at the beach.

When I’m through with my yard work, I want to go to a movie.

I’ll look through all of the things in this box, but I don’t think that I’ll want one thing in there.

I went through my room, but I didn’t find my green dress.

I did a good job, but I’m happy to be through with that hard work!

I know that you are sad, but I will help you to get through this.

I saw a red bird fly through the woods.

Mom will go through our new house to see what room is the best one to put this chair in.

gave

I just gave some more milk to the cats.

Pam gave Jan some help when she had to clean up her room.

I gave one of the cookies in my lunch box to George.

I gave up after ten minutes; it was just too hard for me to do.

She gave part of her toast to the birds.

The baby gave us a hard time when she didn’t feel well.

I gave a beautiful blue flower to Jan.

I gave each of the kids some gum.

She gave the horse an apple.

Mom gave me her okay, so I then went over to play with George at his house.

nice

It’s so nice to see you after so long a time.

The people at the store were not nice to me.

Look little boy, you have to be nice to the kittens.

I had a nice time at the zoo today.

That little girl is so nice.

After my yard work was over, Dad said, “nice job” to me!

It would be nice to go to a restaurant for dinner tonight.

Please eat your food nice and slow.

The nice doctor said that my leg would be okay in a day or two.

I saw the little girl pet her cat, and she said, “nice kitty.”

been

It’s good to see you after so long a time; how have you been?

I have been to the store to get some eggs and milk.

What have you been up to these last three years?

Have you been at work all this time?

Have you been over to the hospital to see your dad?

I have been hard at work all day long.

He has been to the zoo just once in the last three years.

I have been at school all afternoon to work on the school play.

I have been up in my room to make up my bed.

I think that I have been there once, with Mom and Dad.

animals

I can’t tell you how many animals we saw at the zoo today!

Those animals don’t look very nice.

How many animals do you have at your house?

Our kids love to play with animals.

It’s time to take the animals to the vet; are you ready to go with me?

Look, those cookies look like animals.

Did you know that people are animals, too?

Look for animals when you go to run through the woods.

Will they let us take animals to school for “show and tell.”

Do these big animals eat a lot of food?

+++++

Lesson 16

mommy, first, Jack, Ann, daddy

Mommy, the first thing that I need to do today is eat breakfast.

George, the first time that you do this, it will be pretty hard for you.

The first pet that we had was a small dog named Jack.

I didn’t like Ann much at first, but now I think that she is great!

Daddy, can I be the first one to eat one of those cookies?

The first time that I saw a bear was in a zoo.

The first time that I made a cake, things didn’t go well.

Jan, the first time that you eat a new food, you might not like it very much.

George, I want you to go out and play, but first, can you please clean your room?

That’s the first time that I have been angry with Ann.

boys, stop, really

Boys, I want you to stop that, please.

We will stop at a gas station in a minute.

Jack, that will stop up the sink if you put it in there.

Stop and think for a minute; do you really want to do that?

Mommy, can we stop at the store and get some food for lunch?

I need to stop and sit down for a minute.

Do you need to stop and drink a glass of water?

Let’s stop over there, by that big tree.

Jack, we have to stop at 5:00 PM; I need to go home then.

Boys, we can stop at the first gas station that we see.

plant, tomorrow

We will plant that in the yard tomorrow.

That plant will look good in our back yard.

We asked the Smiths about the blue plant that is in their back yard.

I think that this will grow well if we plant it here in the flower bed.

I’ll get a small green plant at the store; we can put it on the kitchen table.

Where would you like for me to put this plant in your room?

That’s a hard plant to grow; you have to water it a lot.

That’s not a pretty plant; let’s get it out of our yard.

If we plant this here, it will grow to be a big tree one day.

George, never eat this plant; it would be bad for you!

bit, grandma, grandpa

That cat is not nice; it bit me on the leg.

Mommy, can I put a little bit more of that on my plate?

Grandma, when I bit into that apple, I didn’t like it.

Grandpa, that cat just bit your dog!

I’ll have a small bit of ice cream after dinner.

Let’s go run for a bit at the park.

My leg is all red right where a bug bit me.

A little bit of sugar each day is okay, but you don’t want to eat too much of it.

I need to sit down for a little bit.

Grandma, I would like a bit more food, please.

left

I think that I left my hat at school.

There’s a big bug on your left leg, Jan.

If there’s food left over, I’ll put it in the refrigerator.

Look to your left, and I think that you will see the fox that I see.

Jack, are there some cookies left in that box?

Run to your left; then run to your right; then stop.

“Where is our big red bowl?” “You might have left it in the dishwasher.”

When Ann left our house, she was really angry with me.

There are five minutes left in this TV show.

I have one more small job left to do at work; then I’ll come right home.

place

Grandpa says that this restaurant is a great place to eat.

Place the vase with that pretty flower right here; that way, all of us can see it.

What place would you like to go to next?

That beach is a great place to go to for an afternoon.

Let’s find a good place to stop to have lunch.

I need to find some place where I can sit down for a bit.

Now that’s one place that I would really like to go to see some day.

The park is a good place to go to let the puppies run.

You can place that box right here.

That’s not the best place in a kitchen to put a refrigerator.

eyes

I love the way that her pretty blue eyes look.

I don’t want a small bug to get into one of my eyes.

The doctor said, “Let me look at your eyes.”

I can see well from each of my eyes.

Her eyes got really big when she saw the big black dog.

There’s a little bit of water in one of my eyes.

I did not make that up; I saw it with my eyes!

His eyes are brown, not blue.

Mommy, how did you know that I did that; do you have eyes in the back of your head?

When I saw the bear, I had to stop; I could not take my eyes off of it.

its, asleep, babies, favorite

I just gave the dog its food.

The dog is in its bed and is asleep.

The bird is in its nest with its babies.

The Smiths said that their dog is in its dog house.

We put the new plate back in its box.

The kitty is asleep in its favorite chair.

No one wants to eat this cookie; I’ll put it back into its box.

Put that flower back into its vase.

Look at the cat; what is that on its head?

It’s time to put this plant into its pot.

sun, sky

You got a lot of sun when you were at the park today.

The sun is high up in the sky.

The sun will be up in about ten more minutes.

You can see the orange sun in the water.

Never look right at the sun; that is not good for your eyes.

At what time will the sun go down today?

When I did my yard work, I got way too much sun.

The sun will set around 7:00 PM today.

Come into the house and get out of the sun for a little bit.

I will go to my favorite beach this afternoon to sit out and get some sun.

world

Do you think that one bird can fly all the way around the world?

Where in the world is Jack; it’s time for dinner.

Of all the people in the world who I know, Jan is one of the best of them.

Our world has a lot of people on it!

What in the world is that thing in your yard?

Jack, why in the world did you do that to George; that was not nice!

I think that this must be the best restaurant in the world.

How many people around the world do you think are asleep right now?

How long would it take to fly around the world?

Is there some place in the world that is more beautiful than this?

end

Put this vase at the end of the table.

When will this long movie end?

At the end of each day, the sun will set.

At the end of this TV show, all of the people are happy.

After the end of the school day, let’s all go to the park.

When the movie was over, it said “The End.”

How did the cat end up so high up in that tree?

Do you think that bear in the woods might end up in a zoo one day?

You can put this dress on the end of your bed.

Can you please clean that end of the table with this rag?

sat

You can tell that the cat sat right here on the table.

I just sat down to see this TV show.

We sat on the beach for a long time this afternoon.

George sat around all day long and didn’t do a thing.

The dog is asleep by his favorite tree.

Ann sat down at the kitchen table to eat her breakfast.

After Mom made the cake, she got a glass of water and sat down for a minute.

We sat down with the cat, and then the vet came out to see us.

Dad was in his bed, and he sat up when I came into his room.

Each one of the kids sat very still when I asked them to.

use

It’s no use, and I give up; I just can’t do this; it’s too hard.

What use could this have; it’s just way too old to work.

Use this blue rag to clean the table.

I’ll use the blender to make the orange juice.

Can I use this green bowl to put the dog food into?

Use this bacon first when you make breakfast.

This will not work now, so you can’t use it.

What can I use to clean this rug?

Don’t use this cream that’s in the back of the refrigerator; it’s way too old and it’s not good.

Why don’t you use this green vase to put that flower into?

going

I’m going to the store in about five minutes to get some eggs and milk.

George says that he’s going to be a really good boy when grandma and grandpa come to see us.

I’m really happy that we are going to the zoo tomorrow.

When did we last see each other; how have things been going with you?

I’m going down to the kitchen to get some of my favorite ice cream.

Mom is going up to her room to get into bed; she will be asleep in about ten minutes.

The doctor said, “You are going to be all right, Ann.”

Things are going really well at work right now.

I’m going up to see if the babies are fast asleep now.

What are you going to do tomorrow?

what’s

What’s that in your ice cream; is it a bug?

What’s your favorite food, George?

Dad asked, “What’s that thing in the back yard next door?”

We asked the boys, “What’s going on here?”

I might know her; what’s her name?

“What’s the time right now?” “It’s 3:00 PM.”

What’s that up in the sky; is it a kite?

Do you know what’s for dinner; I could eat a horse!

Kids, we know what’s best for you, so please do what we tell you to do.

What’s that in the water; is it a snake or a fish?

+++++

Lesson 17

something

Can you think of something that you would like to do tomorrow?

Now that’s something that I would like to do one day.

Grandma, can you give me something to eat please?

The school play was really something good to see.

Jan, tell me about something fun that you did at school today.

I want to do something nice for Grandpa.

There’s something big up in the sky, but I can’t tell what it is.

There’s something that I need to tell you about.

I need something to use to clean the rug.

Mommy wants to make something new, so I asked her to make an orange cake.

lived

We have lived in this house for many years.

I think that this bird lived in a nest up in this tree.

In all of my years, I have just lived in one place.

Please tell me where you have lived.

Good job Jack; you have lived up to what you said that you would do.

I have never lived in a nice place.

Grandma lived with us in our house for two years.

My daddy has lived all over the world.

Once, I lived in that house right next to the school.

When we lived next door to the Smiths, we had two puppies.

trees

How many birds do you think are up in those trees?

I would like to go high up in those trees.

I saw a squirrel jump through those trees.

There are a lot of big trees in these woods.

The trees in our back yard are pretty.

Those trees look like they need more water.

The top of those trees is high up in the sky.

Let’s go run around and around those trees.

Trees can make a good home for birds.

In the yard next to our house, the trees are very big.

quite, sure

I’m not quite sure what she said.

I know quite a bit about dogs and cats.

That’s quite a lot of food on your plate; are you sure that can you eat all of that?

That barber is quite good, so I go to him all the time.

Mommy is quite angry at Dad; what did he do to make her that way?

I’m not quite sure what to make for dinner tonight.

I had quite a good time at school today.

Yes, I’ll be quite happy to help you with this.

Ann, I must tell you that your house is quite pretty!

We have not been there in quite a long time.

hot

This bowl of soup is really hot.

It was just way too hot at the beach today, so I was not there for a long time.

Would you boys like to have hot dogs for lunch?

I think that it’s going to be a very hot day.

This food is still too hot to eat.

I don’t like it when I feel too hot.

It was really hot in the gym this afternoon.

The water in the sink is quite hot.

My room was too hot last night.

I got really hot when I did my yard work.

frog

Jack, you can’t have that frog in the house!

Jan found a big frog in the woods this afternoon.

Daddy, can I have a frog for a pet?

I saw our dog run after a frog in our yard.

I want to get that frog out of the water.

Jack had a frog at school today that we saw at “show and tell.”

That frog can jump really high!

When I put a frog on the top of her head, she got really angry with me.

A frog got into the kitchen through the back door.

When Mommy saw my frog in the sink, it made her jump back.

king

Our king is not nice to many people, but the queen is.

The king called me in, and he asked me to help him with a big job.

The king was on a horse, and he was going after a fox.

I didn’t know about the big dinner that the king is going to have for all of us.

The king will get angry if we give him fish for dinner; that’s just not his favorite food.

They had to take the king to the hospital this morning.

The king will show me his library tomorrow.

When the king asked for a glass of water, I saw a boy jump up fast to get it for him.

The king has lots of people who work for him.

The king and queen came to our school this morning!

rain, fell, hurt, Pete

A hard rain fell from the sky.

I fell down and hurt my left leg.

A squirrel fell from a small tree in the back yard, but it ran off and didn’t look like it was hurt.

Mommy fell off of a chair and hurt her head a little bit.

A baby bird fell out of its nest.

The sun was really hot, so Jack fell back into the water.

I saw something fly through the sky; then it fell into our yard.

I got up from my bed, saw a big bug on the rug, and then I fell back into my bed.

Mom and Dad didn’t feel well today, so it fell on me to look after Pete for the day.

Oh no, the glass vase fell off of the kitchen table.

again, Deb

Pete, please don’t do that again!

Once again, I had to tell Deb to clean up her room.

I’m going to run around that tree again.

I think that it’s going to rain again tonight.

Pete, your dad has said this to you again and again; you have to be nice to Deb!

I want to see this movie again one day.

I got up from the ice, but then I fell again in about a minute.

I’ll never go to that restaurant again; their food is really bad.

Again, I need to tell you that you must make up your bed each morning.

I saw the red fox again in the woods this afternoon.

pig

Did you know that bacon is made from a pig?

Are there people who would have a pig as a pet?

A pig will eat as much food as you will give it.

I’m going to “pig out” at my favorite restaurant tomorrow.

I didn’t know that a pig could run that fast.

Come on, Pete, it’s not nice to eat like a pig.

Deb, it’s not clean in here; I don’t think that a pig would live in your room!

Pete, don’t be a pig and take all of the cookies; let the other kids have some of them.

Grandpa is going to get a pig and a horse.

How much work would it be to keep a pig at home?

should

Daddy, what should I do now; I didn’t think that this would be so hard to do.

I don’t think that you should go out of the house; there’s too much rain right now.

Are you really sure that you should do that?

Should I tell Pete what Deb said to me?

Should I put this food back into the refrigerator?

If the babies are not asleep, what should I do with them?

When you are at school, you should work hard to know a lot about lots of things.

I don’t think that you should see that movie; there are many bad things that go on in it.

You should let the puppies out of the house so that they can run around in the yard.

Mommy should get some more milk when she is at the store.

used, rags

He used that pot to make the soup in.

Mommy used three eggs to make the cake.

I’m just not used to this new bed; I think that it’s too hard.

You will have to work hard at your new school, but you will get used to it fast.

We used all of these rags to clean up the rug.

Pete used this big fork to eat his food with.

He used this kite today, and for once, it didn’t go into the trees!

Deb used this knife to put jam on her toast, so it will work for you, too.

You really used your head to get that old thing to work again.

I used this umbrella to keep the rain off of my head.

she’s, nurse

She’s a great nurse, and we all want her to work here for a very long time.

Did you know that she’s ten years old?

I think that she’s going to come over to our house around 3:00 PM.

We know that she’s going to get used to her new school and be happy there.

She’s going to have on a pretty new dress for the school play.

I think that she’s going through a pretty hard time right now.

Well, she’s just not very good at this.

How do you know if she’s going to like this food?

I don’t know why, but she’s happy when she’s out in the rain.

How did she do that; she’s got a robin on top of her head!

soon

Dad called and said that he would be home soon.

Soon, dinner will be ready.

Come on, Daddy, it’s too soon for me to have to go to bed!

I think that the rain will stop soon.

My yard work will be over soon.

School will be out soon, and we will get to play a lot more.

The new movie that we want to see will be out soon.

Your grandma and grandpa will come over to our house soon.

Can we stop at a gas station soon; we need some food.

I don’t know how soon I can take the time to do this job for you.

hand

I hurt my left hand at school today.

Deb, there’s a big bug on your right hand.

Can you please hand me the salt and sugar?

If you will hand me that, I will help you to get it to work.

Deb, that’s not your glass; please hand it back over to Pete.

I have got to hand it to you; you did a great job with that.

On the one hand, we could go to a movie; on the other hand, we could go to the zoo.

The bad man said, “If you don’t hand that over to me, I will hurt you.”

This dress is a “hand-me-down,” but it is still pretty.

I do the best at that when I use my right hand to do it.

+++++

Lesson 18

asks, questions

That little boy Pete asks so many questions!

Mom asks me how I feel each morning after I get out of bed.

If Deb asks you to come to her house this afternoon, will you go over there?

If Ann asks you for some gum, will you give some to her?

When the nurse asks you where you hurt, you must show her that bad place on your thumb.

When Daddy asks me to help him with yard work, I am nice, and I say “yes” to him.

If Deb asks you what your favorite food is, what will you tell her?

If Daddy asks where I am, tell him that I’m up in my room.

I’m not sure what to say when Grandma asks me what I want to do this afternoon.

I say “yes” when Grandpa asks me if I’m happy.

land, feet

When you see a cat jump off of a table, you know that it will land on its feet.

I don’t want my kite to land in the top of that big tree over there.

Look at that land next to the school; there are lots of sheep there.

Our house has a lot of land around it, and a lot of that is woods.

Dad said, “I think that I’m about to land a good new job at the place where I work.”

When you jump up high, you don’t want to come down and land on your head!

The Smiths have some land on the beach where they could put up a new house.

I just saw three big birds land in our back yard.

Look at this map, and I’ll show you where the land is that Grandpa is going to give to us.

I saw a big bug land on her head.

you’re

Ann, you’re going to love what I made for our dinner tonight.

I don’t know why he asks me so many questions about this.

When you go up to bed, you’re going to find that the babies are fast asleep in their room.

I think that you’re ready for me to show you how to do this.

I know that you’re going to fly this kite high up in the sky.

Are you quite sure that you’re ready to do this?

You’re going to clean up your room tomorrow morning, right?

Mom said that you’re about to help me with the yard work; is that right?

Grandma asked, “Ann, just where do you think you’re going at this time of night?”

The Smiths say that you’re good boys when you go to play with George at their house.

before

Grandpa said, “Before I come up to bed, I’ll clean up the kitchen.”

Do you want to do this little job before or after you eat your lunch?

You should stop that before you hurt your feet.

I need for you to do that before tomorrow.

I need to tell you something before you’re asleep.

Before she asks her questions, you must tell her what went on at school today.

Boys, you can’t have those cookies right before you eat your dinner!

Before today, I didn’t know about that.

Before we go to see the Smiths, let’s get a cake at the store to take to them.

I want to tell you something before you head off to school.

sleep

I want you to sleep well tonight.

I did hard work today, and I need to go to sleep now.

I think that I went to sleep at about 10:00 PM last night.

If the babies are in our room, I can’t get to sleep.

Daddy said that he didn’t get much sleep last night.

Grandpa and Grandma go to sleep each night at 10:00 PM.

This bad movie is going to put me to sleep.

Boys, you look like you’re ready to go to sleep.

It’s time to go to sleep now!

I don’t want to go to sleep now; my favorite TV show is still on!

wind

Look out there; there’s a lot of wind with this hard rain.

You can tell that there’s a lot of wind today when you look at the trees.

I can’t put on this hat; there’s too much wind out there today.

How can a bird fly in a wind like this?

Look at the black sky; the rain and wind will be here soon.

Daddy, the man on the TV says that there will be lots of wind tomorrow.

I can’t sleep well when there’s a lot of wind out there.

Today is a good day to fly a kite high up in the sky; the wind is just right.

I’m not ready to go out in that wind and rain!

We can’t go out there with the babies; there’s way too much wind.

gets

My mom gets angry with me if I don’t make my bed each morning.

If Dad gets hurt at the gym, he will go to see the doctor for help.

Jack gets to see the new movie tomorrow.

Dad gets up at 6:00 AM each day to get ready to go to work.

George gets a big cookie in his lunch box each day of school.

My mom is a nurse, and she gets to help a lot of people each day.

If Deb gets to go to the zoo tomorrow, her mom said that I can go with them.

The place that we went to gets a lot of rain a lot of the time.

If Mom gets eggs at the store, I will help her to make a cake.

It would be nice if Ann gets to come over and play with me this afternoon.

thought

Oh, you’re still at home; I thought that you would be at the store.

I just thought of something that I need to tell you about.

I thought that I would make soup for dinner last night, but Jack said that we could go to a restaurant.

You thought that I was ready to do that, but I was not good at it.

Mom thought that the babies were asleep, but they were not.

Deb thought that she had hurt her feet, but she says that she’s okay now.

We thought that the boys were very good when all of us were over at the Smiths yesterday.

They thought about going to the park this morning, but they didn’t go, after all.

We thought that the rain would stop by 2:00 PM, but it didn’t.

I thought a lot about what you said to me this morning, and now I think that you’re right.

rock, under

I’m going to rock the babies in this chair.

This dinner is great, Mom; you rock!

Look at this pretty rock here in the water.

If that big rock fell on my head, it would really hurt!

Your head is as hard as a rock.

Where did this rock in our yard come from?

Look at the bug that I found under this rock!

Things didn’t go well when I made the cake; it’s as hard as a rock.

I’m going to take this pretty rock to school tomorrow for “show and tell.”

I hurt my leg when I fell on that rock.

Are you sure that there’s something under your bed?

Let’s go sit under that big tree to get out of the sun.

What’s that under your thumb; is it a small bug?

The cat is asleep under the orange chair.

Do you see the squirrel that’s under that bird nest?

“Why are the babies under the kitchen table?” “I’m not sure, but I think that they just like to play there.”

If you put your head under the water, you can see a lot of beautiful fish here.

The dog went to sleep under our apple tree.

The dog found a bit of bacon under the kitchen table; I saw him eat it.

Please get me the pot that’s under the kitchen sink.

hear

Please say that once more; I could not hear you very well.

I hear that the new movie is really great.

Did you hear that George got hurt at school today?

I don’t think that the boys could hear you; I’ll go into the woods to tell them that it’s time for dinner.

Are you sure that you’re ready to hear what I’m about to tell you; it’s not good.

What do you hear from the Smiths; are they happy in their new home?

I would like to hear about how your day was at school today.

I think that a dog can hear really well.

Did you hear that there’s a new bear at the zoo?

I would like to hear how you think that you can do that?

turn, light

Can you please turn on the light?

It’s not very light out there; do you think that we are about to get some rain?

This box is light; I will not need your help, and I can take it into the kitchen.

I don’t think that this light will work; we need to get a new one.

When you are not in this room, please turn that light off.

The man on TV said that we are going to have some light rain today.

I think that I’ll have just a light lunch today; that way I can eat a lot at dinner.

I see a light in the woods; what do you think it could be from?

Do you know what that light in the sky is?

Did you turn off the light in your room before you came down to the kitchen?

Stop, turn left here, and we will be at the Smiths in just a minute.

Turn around, and let me see the back of your new dress.

It’s my turn to take something to school for “show and tell.”

This ice will turn to water when it gets hot.

Turn over that rock and let’s see if there is a bug under it.

Ann, it’s your turn to put things into the dishwasher.

Look at how fast I can turn around and around on my feet!

An ox can’t turn around very fast.

snow

Ann said, “Yes, there’s going to be a lot of snow tomorrow.”

Will we have so much snow that we might get out of school?

Don’t you just love to play in the snow?

I would love it if this rain would turn to snow.

How many feet of snow might we get?

There’s so much snow that we can’t get to the store.

I don’t want the snow to turn to ice; that would be really bad.

Red and blue birds look so pretty in the snow.

When we go out of the house, what do you think the baby will think about the snow?

The kids are going to the park to play in the snow.

I think that she asks a lot of hard questions, don’t you?

How many feet of water do you think that we are in right here?

Will that ox know what to do when it is out in the snow?

When I look at this map, I think that we are not in the right place.

When I feel my gum with my thumb, I think that I must have hurt it.

The nurse asked me where I have a bad itch.

When Dad questions you about this, just tell him each thing that you saw.

This map says that we should get there in about ten minutes.

Jack has a lot of questions about animals.

When you go into that room, you will see that the nurse asks you a lot of questions.

I ran a lot at the beach, and now my feet hurt.

These rags are not clean; please don’t use them.

We can turn this very old dress into rags to clean with.

The nurse at the hospital said that I was a good girl.

We asked the nurse at the hospital if we could take some ice cream up to George.

The vase fell over, so put these rags down on the rug to get up that water.

Mom questions me a lot about how my school day went.

That table is six feet long.

That girl with the blue dress wants to be a nurse some day.

That doctor says that our mom is a great nurse.

How many rags do we need to clean this room with?

I have a bad itch, and I want it to go away!

The doctor asked if we had more questions for him.

For now, just put these clean rags on my bed.

Do you think that the cat would like to jump into that box of rags?

Lots of eggs fell on the rug; use these rags to clean them up.

Jack has some questions about how to use this thing.

Jack, your feet are really big!

You need to clean your feet before you come back into the house.

Do you think that you can jump two feet high?

Lesson 19

English Verb Tenses: Lesson A

This is our first of many lessons that will work on learning English verb tenses. Verb tenses in English are very challenging, for three reasons: first, there are many spelling differences among verbs that confuse the issue; second, there are no hard-and-fast “rules” to go by, because there are many different “irregular” versions of our verb tenses; third, there are many different verb tenses (12) that describe varying depictions of present, past, and future, especially including depictions of “ongoing” actions.

This Lesson A will start with the “easiest spelling version” of the 12 English verb tenses (we’ll be using the verb “play” as the example), and later lessons will unfold all of the other variations that you will encounter.

We will now provide background information about verb tenses, and this is primarily to help English-speaking instructors. We will provide translations of this background information, but we are not sure how easily understood the translations will be. We are grateful to two websites that helped us pull together this background information: grammerly.com and prowritingaid.com .

What are verb tenses?

Verb tenses are changes or additions to verbs to show when an action takes place in the past, present, or future, and often to show how long it takes for such an action to occur (such grammatical aspects add more detail about the duration or time that an action takes). Another way of putting it is that the verb tenses show a “time reference,” i.e., when and how the verb occurred.

What are the main categories of English verb tenses?
The three main categories are: 1) “present,” 2) “past,” and 3) “future.”

1) The present tense represents actions that are happening now (although some versions of this actually depict actions in the past – confusing!).

2) The past tense represents actions that happened earlier (in the past).

3) The future tense represents actions that will happen later (in the future).

Each of the above three main categories also offers four different grammatical aspects. This is how we get a total of twelve verb tenses. These four aspects are called: a) “simple tense,” b) “perfect tense,” c) “continuous (or ‘progressive’) tense,” and d) “perfect continuous (or ‘progressive’) tense.”

We will show some sentence examples of the 12 possibilities just below – just as a preview – and then the sentence examples further below will have more detailed descriptions and more varied possibilities of usage.

chess, plays, played, week, hour, walked, games, playing, sister, loud, knock, Saturday, tournament, since, year, finally, beat, game, celebrate, birthday

PREVIEW:

A) The simple tense is pretty straightforward and refers to the “normal” forms of the past, present, and future tenses. It shows actions happening at different times.

SIMPLE PRESENT:

I play chess well.

She plays chess well.

SIMPLE PAST:

I played chess yesterday.

SIMPLE FUTURE:

I will play chess tomorrow.

B) The perfect tense is used for completed actions that are happening at different points in time, either completed or ongoing. Example 1) a sentence might indicate that the action occurred continuously in the past AND still happens in the present. Example 2) the sentence might indicate that the action occurred ONLY in the past, and that it has no relation to the present.

PRESENT PERFECT
:

I have played lots of chess this week.

PAST PERFECT:

I had played an hour of chess before I walked my dog.

FUTURE PERFECT:

I will have played ten chess games before the end of this week.

C) The continuous tense is used for ongoing actions, or actions that take a while to complete. For instance, a sentence might show that something is lasting for many hours before it is finished.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS:

I am playing chess with my sister.

PAST CONTINUOUS:

I was playing chess when there was a loud knock at the door.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS:

On Saturday, I will be playing chess in a big tournament.

D) The perfect continuous tense is used to describe ongoing actions that happen over a period of time.

PRESENT PERFECT
CONTINUOUS:

I have been playing chess since 8:00 AM.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

I had been playing chess for a year before I finally beat my dad in a game.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS:

I will have been playing chess for two years by the time I celebrate my next birthday.

We’ll now learn more details about the 12 verb tenses, using the verb play as our learning example; we will stick to only one repeated concept in these sentences, and that is “playing chess”:

This verb “play” shows you the “most regular” spellings of verb tenses. The “root” letters of the verb are never altered, so you will always see the letters p-l-a-y. The variations are: play , plays , played , playing .

1 of 3) The PRESENT verb tenses.

Well, the confusion begins immediately. Not all four of the present verb tenses actually describe something that’s happening now! They’re called “present” because the first verb of the conjugation is in “simple present.”

every, order, champion, past, forward, future, exciting, friend, most, life, finish, Christmas, remember, looks, club, hour

1a) SIMPLE PRESENT
This is used for: 1) individual actions that are happening right at this moment and / or are generally true in the present; OR 2) habitual actions in the present; i.e., things that happen regularly. You will use just the “root” word of the verb tense (so, in this case, “play” or “plays“).

1a 1)
 I play chess well.

You play chess well.

We play chess well.

They play chess well.

He plays chess well.

She plays chess well.

1a 2)
I play chess every day.

You play chess every day.

We play chess every day.

They play chess every day.

He plays chess every day.

She plays chess every day.

1b) PRESENT PERFECT
This is used in multiple ways, and it really refers to the past rather than to the present (something occurred in the past, but at an indefinite time; or something happened in the past and continues into the present): 1) an ongoing action that started in the past but is NOT yet completed; 2) the same action completed multiple times in the past and likely to be completed again in the future; 3) an action that was completed very recently, usually paired with the words “just” or “now”;  4) an uncompleted action that is expected to be finished; 5) the verb tense emphasizes the significance of a completed action, especially one that has happened over time. You will place the word “have” or “has” in front of the past participle “played” (so, in this case, “have played” or “has played“).

1b 1)

I have played some chess games in this tournament, but there are more games to play in order to see who the champion will be.

1b 2)

I have played a lot of chess this past week, and I look forward to many more future games.

1b 3)

I have just played an exciting chess game with my friend.

1b 3)

I have now played the most exciting chess game of my life.

1b 4)

I have played part of a chess game with a friend, but we need to finish that game tomorrow.

1b 5)

I have played a chess game with my sister every Christmas day since I can remember.

You have played a lot of chess this week, and you look forward to future games.

We have played a lot of chess this week, and we look forward to future games.

They have played a lot of chess this week, and they look forward to future games.

He has played a lot of chess this week, and he looks forward to future games.

She has played a lot of chess this week, and she looks forward to future games.

1c) PRESENT CONTINUOUS
This is showing an action that is occurring frequently or is an ongoing action: 1) happening right now, OR 2) will be happening in the near future (tonight, tomorrow, next week, etc.). You will place the word “am” or “is” or “are” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “am playing, “is playing,” or “are playing“).

1c 1)

Right now, I am playing a chess game with my sister.

1c 2)

I am playing chess tonight at my chess club.

You are playing chess tonight at your chess club.

We are playing chess tonight at our chess club.

They are playing chess tonight at their chess club.

He is playing chess tonight at his chess club.

She is playing chess tonight at her chess club.

1d) PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS
This shows an ongoing action in the present that was started in the past and continues in the present. It is often used to emphasize a length of time that has passed. You will place the words “have been” or “has been” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “have been playing” or “has been playing“).

I have been playing this chess game with my sister for over an hour.

You have been playing this chess game with me for over an hour.

We have been playing this chess game with each other for over an hour.

They have been playing this chess game with each other for over an hour.

He has been playing this chess game with his sister for over an hour.

She has been playing this chess game with her sister for over an hour.

2 of 3) The PAST verb tenses.

eaten, hours, realized, grandparents, phone, needed, talk, during, summer, vacations, always, taught, poorly, until, teacher, quietly, startled, tremendous, clap, thunder

2a) SIMPLE PAST
This is pretty straightforward, as it shows actions that have been completed at one particular point in the past, with no other words for extra emphasis being added (i.e., no other words are “paired” with the verb). You will use the root word “play” and add “-ed” to the root word, thus “played.”

I played a chess game yesterday.

You played a chess game yesterday.

We played a chess game yesterday.

They played a chess game yesterday.

He played a chess game yesterday.

She played a chess game yesterday.

2b) PAST PERFECT (OR ‘PLUPERFECT’)
This is when you have two different actions in the past, and you want to show that one past action occurred earlier than the other one (these past actions occurred at some indefinite time). There are some common “key words” that are involved in such sentences, like “before” and “when.” You will place the word “had” in front of the past participle “played” (so, in this case, “had played“).

I had played chess before I had eaten my dinner.

You had played chess before you had eaten your dinner.

We had played chess before we had eaten our dinner.

They had played chess before they had eaten their dinner.

He had played chess before he had eaten his dinner.

She had played chess before she had eaten her dinner.

I had played chess for more than two hours when I realized that my pets had not come into the house.

You had played chess for more than two hours when you realized that your pets had not come into the house.

We had played chess for more than two hours when we realized that our pets had not come into the house.

They had played chess for more than two hours when they realized that their pets had not come into the house.

He had played chess for more than two hours when he realized that his pets had not come into the house.

She had played chess for more than two hours when she realized that her pets had not come into the house.

2c) PAST CONTINUOUS
This is used: 1) to show an ongoing action in the past, especially if the action was interrupted by another action, OR 2) to show habitual actions that occurred in the past but that do not occur in the present anymore. This second usage may see such phrases where adverbs are used like “always,” or where adverb phrases are used like “all the time.” You will place the words “was” or were” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “was playing” or “were playing“).

2c 1)

I was playing chess when my grandparents called on the phone, and I needed to stop to talk to them.

He was playing chess when his grandparents called on the phone, and he needed to stop to talk to them.

She was playing chess when her grandparents called on the phone, and she needed to stop to talk to them.

You were playing chess when your grandparents called on the phone, and you needed to stop to talk to them.

We were playing chess when our grandparents called on the phone, and we needed to stop to talk to them.

They were playing chess when their grandparents called on the phone, and they needed to stop to talk to them.

2c 2)

During my summer vacations, I was always playing chess.

 – OR –

During my summer vacations, I was playing chess all the time.

During his summer vacations, he was always playing chess.

During her summer vacations, she was always playing chess.

During your summer vacations, you were always playing chess.

During our summer vacations, we were always playing chess.

During their summer vacations, they were always playing chess.

2d) PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS
This is used somewhat like the past perfect, but it describes ongoing actions that happened in the past instead of just a one-time occurrence. Another way to put it: actions were started in the past, were ongoing, but then ended at a more recent time in the past. Often, the words “when,” “until,” and “before” are used to connect things to a past action. You will place the words “had been” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “had been playing“).

Before I taught my sister to play chess, I had been playing the game for four years.

I had been playing chess very poorly until I got a really good teacher.

I had been quietly playing chess for an hour when I was startled by a tremendous clap of thunder.

You had been playing chess very poorly until you got a really good teacher.

We had been playing chess very poorly until we got a really good teacher.

They had been playing chess very poorly until they got a really good teacher.

He had been playing chess very poorly until he got a really good teacher.

She had been playing chess very poorly until she got a really good teacher.

+++++

3 of 3) The FUTURE verb tenses.

evening, already, arrive, competitive, July

3a) SIMPLE FUTURE
This is for actions that have not happened yet, but that will start and finish at some time in the future. You simply put the word “will” in front of the root verb “play” (so, in this case, “will play.”)

I will play chess tomorrow.

You will play chess tomorrow.

We will play chess tomorrow.

They will play chess tomorrow.

He will play chess tomorrow.

She will play chess tomorrow.

3b) FUTURE PERFECT
This shows an action that will be completed in the future BY A SPECIFIED TIME (will occur in the future and will be completed before another point in the future). You will often see it used with words like: “by,” “before,” “at,” and “when.” You will place the words “will have” in front of the past tense “played” (so, in this case, “will have played“).

I will have played my chess game before you get home.

I will have played my chess game by the time you get home tonight.

At 6:00 PM this evening, I will have already played my chess game.

When you arrive home tonight, I will have already played my chess game.

You will have played your chess game by the time I get home tonight.

We will have played our chess game by the time you get home tonight.

They will have played their chess game by the time you get home tonight.

He will have played his chess game by the time you get home tonight.

She will have played her chess game by the time you get home tonight.

3c) FUTURE CONTINUOUS
This is for future actions that are happening over a period of time, especially when a specific time is mentioned; this shows more certainty and likelihood than the simple future (things will begin in the future and will be ongoing). You will place the words “will be” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “will be playing“).

Today, I will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Today, you will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Today, we will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Today, they will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Today, he will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Today, she will be playing chess from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

3d) FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS
This depicts future ongoing activities that continue on up to a certain stopping point (things will start in the future, will be ongoing, and then will stop at another future point). Like the future perfect and future continuous, this is used with a specified time. You will place the words “will have been” in front of the present participle “playing” (so, in this case, “will have been playing“).

I will have been playing competitive chess for a year by the end of July.

You will have been playing competitive chess for a year by the end of July.

We will have been playing competitive chess for a year by the end of July.

He will have been playing competitive chess for a year by the end of July.

She will have been playing competitive chess for a year by the end of July.

For the life of me George, why in the world did you do that?

I walked quietly past Jack, and he didn’t see me.

Did you remember that today is her birthday?

What day do you like more, Christmas day, or your birthday?

The evening didn’t go well, as Grandma and Grandpa were a little angry with each other about something.

After we finish dinner, I’ll clean off the kitchen table.

Most of the time, my day at school will go well.

In the past, Mom and Dad taught me how to be nice to people.

I finally taught my baby sister how to turn on the TV.

I walked up to the cat quietly, but I still startled it.

When will that loud thunder finally stop?

The tremendous man said, “When we box each other in the tournament, I’m going to knock you out!”

Do you think that she will remember what I said that she needs to do today?

She was the world champion for just a year.

Did you see that bird land right next to my feet; that really startled me.

Mom, the Smiths live in a tremendous house.

About what time did you arrive at school this morning?

We can’t celebrate until you finish all of your work.

I hear something like thunder, but there’s no rain right now.

I thought that I would arrive at your house around 3:00 PM; is that okay?

The things in their yard make it look like they’re about to celebrate something big.

Will you clap for me when I finish this hard work?

I need to beat the eggs before I make the cake.

When I hear a big clap of thunder, I get under my bed!

I know that you’re fast, but I still think that I can beat you to the park; ready, set, go!

What will the future be like for us when we grow up?

I should not have eaten all of that food.

When Jack plays a game, he is always quite competitive.

I need more hours in each day to do all of my work.

We will now go forward into the woods to see what animals we might find.

The teacher gave us the time that we needed to finish our work.

How hot do you think that it will be this summer?

Mom and Dad really like to go on fun vacations, don’t they?

Those rags are too old to be of use; we don’t need to keep them.

Every time that he saw her, he realized that he was in love with her.

Most of the time, I go to bed by 10:00 PM.

When we arrive at the zoo, what animals do you want to see first?

Don’t go out there; the wind is so bad that it will knock you down!

Thank you for your help; I finally know how to do that now.

It looks like you need to clean up your room.

Some people say that life is like a game.

I think that Jack will eat most of those cookies.

Dad has to go to the barber on Saturday.

Our day at school today was fun and exciting.

Is that your friend Deb over there?

Mom quietly said to me, “Good job.”

We can’t go back to the past, and we can’t go forward to the future.

Let’s start to learn English letter sounds. We’ll show you a letter, and we’ll give you a word example where the FIRST letter in the word (except for the word “six,” where the sound that is made is at the END of the word) makes the most frequent sound that each letter makes. You will later learn that English letters can make more than one sound. It is often confusing. Click on the green speaker button and pay close attention to the first sound that you hear (the last sound in the word “six”); then click on the word and click inside the word box as many times as you need to in order to hear each letter’s individual sound.
